Sania Mirza disposed of Italian Maria Elena Camerin 6-3, 6-3 at the DFS Classic WTA tournament in Birmingham to reach the second round. In the next round, she will take on another Italian, Mara Santangelo. Santangelo is seeded eighth here.

Meanwhile, her maiden singles win at the French Open has seen Sania rise eight places to 42 in the latest WTA rankings released today.

The 20-year-old, who was 50th last week, has 546 points. She has, however, slid in the doubles chart, dropping four places to 41st.

In the ATP charts, Leander Paes’ second-round loss at the French Open has pushed him down by four places to 10th this week.

However, Mahesh Bhupathi improved his standing by six rungs to 20th following his semi-final appearance at Roland Garros.
