The Shiromani Akali Dal and the BJP have gone all-out to take full advantage of media reports about Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh8217;s son Raninder8217;s allegedly illegal business deals.

A delegation of MPs belonging to the two parties today met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as well as President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and sought the setting up of a central agency to probe allegations of hawala deals against the CM8217;s son. They said the state police could not be expected to act neutral on the issue. After the meeting, SAD president Parkash Singh Badal said the Prime Minister heard them out patiently for nearly 20 minutes and assured them action would be taken.

A memorandum submitted by SAD-BJP MPs alleged that while the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence DRI had earlier launched investigations into the matter on Badal8217;s demand, it seemed to have suddenly pulled the brakes. SAD sources said that if the Centre did not take sufficient action on the issue, they would file a PIL soon.

Amarinder, meanwhile, has threatened to sue the newspaper, which published the report on his son8217;s business deals, for criminal defamation. He alleged that the report had been 8216;8216;published at the behest of forces that were inimical to him8217;8217;. The Opposition has also apparently rejected the Nehra Commission set up by Amarinder to probe the allegations against Raninder, arguing that Justice Nehra was not appointed after consultations with the Punjab and Haryana Chief Justice or the Chief Justice of India. They have also questioned the conduct of the proceedings of the commission.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister, who had earlier called Leonard Freeke, Raninder8217;s associate, a family friend, claimed that the Amsterdam-based businessman was speaking out against his son probably because he needed money.
