Herschelle Gibbs struck an imperious century to spur South Africa to an eight-wicket win over West Indies and a clean sweep in the five-match series on Sunday.

After play was stopped twice by rain, South Africa were set a revised target of 211 in 31 overs in reply to West Indies 295 for seven and Gibbs blazed 102 off 84 balls, with 13 fours and three sixes.

Earlier, Devon Smith put a frustrating tour behind him as he hammered 91 off 76 balls. Opening batsman Smith had played a minimal role on tour, appearing in two warm-up matches, two Twenty20 internationals and the first one-day international, making just 50 runs in six innings with a highest score of 12.

But the left-hander from Grenada, who played because Sewnarine Chattergoon was injured, took advantage of excellent batting conditions. He struck 10 fours and three sixes before being caught behind off Charl Langeveldt. Smith8217;s opening partner Brenton Parchment became Shaun Pollock8217;s final victim with the South African veteran set to retire after the series.

Smith and fellow left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul 51 put on 137 off 134 balls for the second wicket to set the West Indies up for a potentially huge total.

Brief scores: West Indies 295 for 7 D Smith 91, S Chanderpaul 51; Langeveldt 3/61 lost to South Africa 211 for 2 H Gibbs 102, J Kallis 74 n.o.
