
Russia today declared a high alert and tightened security at defence installations and transport networks across the country, after a warning from 8220;foreign sources8221; of possible terrorist attacks.
8220;In view of the well-known warning by the National Counter-Terrorism Committee about the threat of terror attacks on public transportation, the Defence Ministry has taken additional measures to protect vital military facilities and state and government infrastructure,8221; Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov told reporters.
Referring to the security situation, Russian Interior Ministry Troops Commander Colonel General Nikolai Rogozhkin told mediapersons that following the warning of terror attacks in Moscow and other Russian regions, troops had been put on high alert.
8220;Due to the terror threat, of which the Federal Operative Headquarters has warned, interior troops were placed on high alert early on January 17 and acted according to a plan, confirmed by the Interior Ministry, and in line with regional interior departments8217; plans in the regions,8221; Rogozhkin said.
He said over 5,000 additional policemen have been deployed to protect citizens using public transportation and the metro in Moscow, St Petersburg and other major cities, adding, 8220;part of our forces is ready to act promptly to repel terror and subversive attacks.8221;
