Ruby opens fashion institute

Later speaking to the press corps, Ruby noted that television was always and will be her baby. "I will not be a heroine until and unless somebody offers me a very good character role. Moreover, your audience form an image about you. Like when I acted in the serial Yeh Hai Raaz, there was such a hue and cry, `Oh, you have turned to acting!’ Even when you are veejaying, you have to act a bit."

But why is she being replaced in all the programmes and ad campaigns? Is it that they use her for commercial mileage and then dump her? "No, TV is a fast-changing world. They work according to certain concepts and I am there as long that particular concept is on the air. For example, when I was on Bakeman’s Ooh, La La, it was the award ceremony. But now Shehezada is there as the concept has changed. Shows come and go and you also need variety on screen. Same with me."

Regarding a debate on the bad influence of TV on youngsters, Ruby was candid enough to admit. "There is a lot of nonsense on TV. Both the quality of programmes that the youngsters watch and the quantity of time that they spend in front of it are the main factors. Since I stress a lot on the values of life, I have never tried to portray myself as an indecent person when I was on Channel V and even now."
