CHANDIGARH, Nov 20: The practice of altering and correcting results after the publication of the official gazette by Punjab University, has given rise to a controversy.
An analysis of the result gazettes published by Punjab University reveals that this practice has been increasingly resorted to during the examination this year. Senior university teachers say this is perhaps the first time that the result has been altered, after the official notification of the result.
An illustrative example is the case of M.A.I Political Science. Two students have had their results altered by a mere correction with a ballpoint pen. One of the students who had secured 183 marks out of 400 has had her marks increased to 187. A little below it, another student is unlucky 8211; she looses a mark with her score of 194 being decreased to 193.
Another student who appeared in M.A.II Punjabi examination was luckier. This time her marks has been hiked from 400 to 440 out of 800.
Changes in the result gazette abound in the first year result of post graduation in Punjabi and the Master of Finance and Control MFC. In MFC, a student whose result was earlier declared as having passed now has his candidature suspended. Two of his colleagues whose earlier result was quot;Result later due to non-receipt of awards, quot; are now mentioned as having failed.
Instead of declaring the result, a blank space was left in the case of two students, one of M.A I Punjabi and another of M.A I English. Their result has been subsequently filled in with a pen. Such changes can also be found in at least five other results.
The Controller of Examination, Punjab University when contacted asked for details of such cases and conceded that the practice was not desirable. quot; These could have occurred due to errors in printing which had to be rectified subsequently.quot; After being made aware of such cases, he stated that such corrections had been sanctioned by the competent officers.
A member of the university syndicate when shown the copies of these gazette observed that the university gazette had the sanctity of an official notification and could not be altered by the mere stroke of a pen. He added that all corrections have to be renotified by another gazette notification. This acquires significance since the result sheets of all students are destroyed after a few years and only gazette copies are maintained by the university for the purpose of record.
