Mr and Mrs Sharma of Borivali, an outer suburb on Mumbai8217;s western line, happen to be among the most recognised couples in their locality these days. They move about in either of their zippy cars 8212; Skoda or Honda City 8212; depending on their mood; dine in the most up-market restaurants; and keep in touch with their two sons 8212; one in Australia and the other in USA 8212; on their chic mobile handsets.
On Thursday, the couple was busy with something more important 8212; they spent the entire day calculating how much 750,000 would mean in Rupees.
We are talking about Gurunath and Poornima Sharma, parents of Rohit Sharma, who has been bought by the Hyderabad IPL team for 750,000.
Three years ago, money meant a lot to this family. 8220;No one in our family has earned as much. No one has done as well as Rohit is doing. What more can you ask from a 20-year-old?8221; says his proud mother.
It is a little known fact that Rohit, in his early playing days, had vowed to shift his parents out from their modest single-room house in Dombivili. He had said then: 8220;Don8217;t worry. Main kuch karta hoon I8217;ll do something.8221;
Three years later, the youngster has lived up to that promise.
If that wasn8217;t enough, Rohit has also managed to send his younger brother Vishal to Florida to study hotel management. 8220;The expenses will be more than Rs two lakh but Rohit is determined not to compromise. We have also told Vishal to make plans for his future and do well in life,8221; says Rohit8217;s father.
The Sharmas also take pride in Rohit8217;s maturity at such an age. 8220;We have a big family and therefore a lot of people have expectations of us,8221; says his mother, but emphasises that her son needs to stay humble.
While father Gurunath has been left wondering why Mumbai did not bid for Rohit, his mother is worried about Rohit8217;s ambitions of buying a Mercedes Benz. 8220;He might as well have seven cars so that he can drive a new one every day of the week. Already there are two, tell me why does he need another one?8221; she argues.
It could be difficult for Rohit to understand this though. At his age, he8217;s full of dreams, wants to score centuries, see India win, buy the Merc and, someday, move to posh Bandra.
