The MRA Marg police along with Mumbai police8217;s Fingerprints Bureau have arrested a man for his role in a robbery at a Sony Ericsson showroom. What was unique about the arrest was the fact that the investigators only had the culprit8217;s fingerprints as clue.
One Tabrej Abu Ansari 24 and his accomplice broke into the Sony Ericsson showroom in Ravi building at DN Road on the night of October 17. They stole 19 cameras and 100 mobile phones worth Rs 10, 75,000. A case was registered at the MRA Marg police station following which the police and the officers of the Fingerprints Bureau thoroughly investigated the scene of crime and found latent fingerprints on walls and doors of cabinets. The fingerprints were found to match with Ansari8217;s, taken by the Bureau for a motorbike theft case in Agripada.
The investigators found that Ansari was a resident of Nagpada. On Thursday he was arrested from his residence. 27 mobile phones and 14 cameras worth Rs 3,85,646 were also recovered. Ansari8217;s accomplice, who the police did not wish to name, is still at large.
Ansari will be produced in a magistrate8217;s court on Friday when the police will seek his custody.
8220;This has been an excellent piece of detection work by the Fingerprints Bureau,8221; said DCP Vishwas Nangre-Patil of Zone 1.
8220;This is a very rare case of detection since it is very difficult to catch criminals in house breaking cases by fingerprints alone. In other robbery cases we usually have descriptions to work on but the fingerprints were all we had this time,8221; he added.
The fingerprints have made MRA police8217;s case stronger, 8220;We can know convict him without any problems. There8217;s no denying fingerprint evidence in court,8221; said Police Inspector R Doiphode of MRA Marg police station.
