Ranbir Das was the only casualty during the team8217;s passage to the semi-finals. But the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board PSPB decided to kep him for the second singles in their All-India inter-institutional table tennis meet clash here today.

For some time it looked like the plan would come undone, as Das erred and fumbled against Indian Audit and Accounts Department8217;s K Srivatsa Chakravarthy. Down 5-11 in the first game, Das staged a comeback in the second, pulling ahead from 7-3 to win at 11-5.

Thereafter, it was neck-and-neck. Beaten again, 8-11, in the third game, the PSPB boy found answers to Chakravarthy8217;s attacking game in the next two, edging through 11-9 and 12-10 to complete a 3-2 win.

Kashyap polished off DD Mohanty 3-0 in the last match, after India No 1 A Sharath Kamal8217;s stroll over Sourav Sengupta, the team winning 3-0.

PSPB again find Railways Sports Promotion Board RSPB at the other end of the table, for the title clash, as last year8217;s runners-up managed to hold off Air India 3-2.

However, with the expected names lining up on the men8217;s side, it was the women8217;s draw that made news. The result apart, it was the way the defending champions RSPB went down that was remarkable 8211; a 0-3 semi-final thrashing by Banks8217; Sports Board.

Anindita Chakraborty was struggling for words to explain, with none of the three team members being able to put up much challenge. After young gun Soumi Mondal was disposed of by the inconsistent but dangerous Mamta Prabhu 9-11, 8-11, 4-11, Aninidita went down to N Arul Sevi 11-8, 11-13, 8-11, 8-11. Sumana Bose capped the misery by losing to Swetha Kumaravel 10-12, 8-11, 9-11.
