
LUDHIANA, Aug 9: With the railway clearing and forwarding agents on strike for the past four days to protest the quot;humiliating treatment meted out to themquot;, the parcel booking work has come to a halt and more than 2,000 parcels have piled up at the railway parcel office here.
Addressing a news conference today, Clearing and Forwarding Parcel Welfare Association president Vinod Kumar and general secretary Pyare Lal alleged that an illegal gratification of Rs 80 had to be paid for booking of each bale or wooden case and the quot;lootquot; was shared by the railway booking staff, Railway Protection Force RPF, Government Railway Police GRP and railway officials.
Not only this, more than 190 clearing and forwarding agents operating here were maltreated, humiliated and at times, abused by RPF and GRP personnel, they alleged.
According to them, 1,200 parcels on an average were booked for outward destinations daily and the number went up to around 1,500 bales and wooden cases during the peak season.
quot;Even after the parcels were duly booked, the clearing and forwarding agents were made to please8217; the loading staff to make sure that the parcels booked were loaded in trains,quot; they said.
The Association has demanded effective measures to check corruption, streamlining parcel booking work and issuing identity cards to clearing and forwarding agents.
BJP legislator Sat Pal Gosain, who was present at the news conference, said the party would resort to a quot;rail rokoquot; agitation from August 17 if the demands of clearing and forwarding agents were not accepted.
