Painted into a corner by the Central Bureau of Investigation CBI in cases like Nandigram police firing, Tapasi Malik murder and Rizwanur Rehman death, the CPM now plans to steal the limelight from the country8217;s premier investigating agency.

On Wednesday, party Legislator Rabin Mondal served a notice to TMC legislator Jaweed Khan, who was named in Rizwanur Rehman8217;s 8220;suicide note8221;.

According to CBI sources, he had written: 8220;The people actually and morally responsible for my death are my uncle Saidur Rehman, uncle-in-law Anil Saraogi, Sukanti Chakraborty, Gyanwant Singh, Ajay Kumar and MLA Javed Khan.8221;

The document had been deleted, but the agency had retrieved the note from the hard drive Rehman8217;s computer. It has been placed before the court as part of the chargesheet.

In his notice, Mondal demanded that an inquiry committee be constituted by the legislative assembly to probe Khan8217;s involvement.

He sought a discussion under Rule 351 of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly rules and procedure. The House will discuss the notice on Thursday.

Mondal said they have been informed that the note levelled allegations against Khan, then city police chief Prasun Mukherjee and deputy commissioner Headquarters Gyanwant Singh. 8220;As the police officers are not part of the House, we only can discuss the role of Khan,8221; said Mondal.

On his part, Khan said the case is pending in High Court, so 8220;it cannot be discussed in the House8221;.

Mondal said, 8220;We will not discuss Rizwanur8217;s death. We only want to know about Khan8217;s involvement. Since he was not named in the CBI chargesheet, there is no bar on discussing the matter in the House.8221;

The Trinamool Congress, which spearheaded the agitation demanding punishment of the accused police officers, has decided to back Khan.

Leader of the Opposition Partha Chatterjee said the matter cannot be discussed in the House. In a letter to Speaker Hashim Abdul Halim, Chatterjee said, 8220;Rule 351 does not permit a probe against a member in this issue8221;.
