
Next time you tune into the FM and hear 8220;Good Morning Shillong8221;, don8217;t pass the infectious voice greeting you as that of any other radio jockey. He is 70-year-old wisecrack Bah Besbha Mr Best, the newest RJ in town, who is effortlessly stealing march over RJs quarter his age, both in energy and enthusiasm.
The station head of Sun FM, which was launched on Monday, Ian Khongmen, claims Besbha to be the 8220;oldest RJ in the country8221; and his channel8217;s USP.
The septuagenarian will be hosting the daily show called Besbha Show, which will be replete with wisecracks and messages for listeners.
With a vigour characteristic of teenagers, Besbha says: 8220;I refuse to grow up anymore and feel like a James Bond in the midst of young girls who are my fellow RJs in the FM station.8221;
Besbha, who was born in 1938, has seen radio ruling the airwaves, and then gradually making way for the television. He is now excited that the radio is back with a bang.
This former Director of Meghalaya Employment and Craftsmen Training says, 8220; My family was initially bewildered when I told them I will be working as a RJ. They thought it was an in-thing for the younger generation.8221; However, it took them only sometime to appreciate my decision, he added.
Besbha, a regular in the local television comedy programmes, admitted he did doubt whether he was cut out for the job. 8220;But when I grabbed the microphone and spoke into it, all my doubts disappeared.8221;
Author of a number of books in Khasi, Besbha will conduct the show in that language. 8220;I will do the show in Khasi as I want to promote the language among the younger generation.8221;
