CHENNAI, July 15: Sachin Ratti (8th seed) upset compatriot and third seed Abhinn Shyam Gupta, setting up a semi-final clash with lee Tsuen Seng of Malaysia in the men’s singles of the Indian Oil Servo Asian Satellite (second leg) Badminton Tournament, now in progress here.

The other semi-final would be between Malaysia’s Yeoh Kay Bin (4th) and fifth seed Nikhil Kanetkar of India.

In quarter-final matches today, Ratti, exhibiting a mixture of defence and aggression, defeated Gupta 15-8, 12-15, 15-12 in a gruelling 67-minute encounter while Lee Tsuen Seng quelled Chetan Anand 13-15, 15-10 15-10.Yeoh Kay Bin Won 15-12, 17-14 against Ajit Wijetilak who fumbled while leading in both the first and second games and allowed the Malaysian to come back into the game.

Nikhil Kanetkar had a easy time beating Palinda Halangoda (Sri Lanka) 15-2 15-1.

In the women’s, top seed Aparna Popat, Manjusha Kanwar (2nd), Neelima Choudary (4th) and unseeded former national champion PVV Lakshmi made it to the semifinals.

Themixed doubles finals would be between two Indian pairs — U Vinodkumar and Madumita Bhist versus Vincent Lobo and PVV Lakshmi.

In an all indian semi-final encounter, Vinodkumar and Bisht defeated Harish Chandar and Archana Deodhar 15-1 15-7, while Lobo and Lakshmi accounted for Sushant Nidodi and Nirmala Kotnis 15-13 9-15 15-2.
