JANUARY 11: J Venkatarama ICF, Chennai maintained his winning spree by upsetting top seed IM P Konguvel in the sixth round of the 4th GTB all-India FIDE rated chess tournament, being held at the Arya Vysya Sangam here on Monday. There were as many as four upsets on the sixth day.

Ramana 6 was in full form today. He opted for Sicilian Najdor defence. Playing a well-controlled game, the former champion went for a new knight move. Konguvel in a battle for the d5 square played a hasty b4 move and lost control over the game as his opponent grabbed a few pawns to put him under pressure. On the 52nd move Konguvel was left with no other option but to resign.

In the other interesting match of the day, A Shankar of Southern Railway scored a fine win over IM Mishra of Tata Steel of India in a Catalan Defence.

Commonwealth champion Atanu Lahiri, who has had a bad run so far, succumbed to S Mari Arul, while IM-elect Jayant Gokhale was stunned by AS Baratakka.

Fourth seed SK Rathore lost to Dilip Pagay, while PDS Girinath defeated K Chakravarthy.
