CHENNAI, NOV 17: Kannada film-star Rajkumar today denied that he had earned his freedom from outlaw Veerappan by pretending to be ill on the advice of a woman-doctor.

“I have never even thought of earning my freedom by such deceit,” Rajkumar said in a statement here which was released by main emissary, P Nedumaran, at a press conference.

Rajkumar said he had earned his freedom only through the “strenuous” efforts taken by Nedumaran and other emissaries and through the patient moves of the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu Governments and the goodwill of the people of both states.

Claiming that his account of Dr Bhanu’s treatment had been “misunderstood, and distorted in a section of the media,” Rajkumar said she had treated him for chest-pain and asked him why he was keeping his condition to himself, when he was actually in need of help.

“I replied that I had to pretend to be doing well in the present situation,” Rajkumar said. He appealed to everyone not to politicise the issue.

Nedumaran explained that Bhanu was a medical practitioner known to Kolathur T S Mani, a public figure in Salem district, who assisted the emissaries in their mission. She had bravely come to the forests on Mani’s request to examine Rajkumar in a humanitarian gesture.
