SHIMLA, Oct 1: Eleventh All India Rajbhasha Sammelan, beginning here tomorrow, will adopt a resolution to make a forceful and renewed demand for introduction of Hindi as a compulsory subject in the schools from primary standard.

The three-day sammelan being organised by Rashtriya Hindi Academy, Calcutta, will broadly deliberate on the issues pertaining to Hindi language and strengthening emotional integration through language and literature. Governor V.S. Rama Devi will inaugurate the sammelan at Peterhoff Complex.

Addressing a press conference here, Swadesh Bharati, a famous Hindi writer and president of Rashtriya Hindi Academy, announced that the academy was totally opposed to the territorial divisions on the basis of languages. 8220;The sammelan proposes to pass a resolution asking the President to promulgate an ordinance, making language as central subject instead of it being a state subject,8221; he informed.

The proposed ordinance should simultaneously make teaching of Hindi a compulsory subject from primary level in all schools of the country.

Bharati expressed concern that Hindi was not getting a fair deal and media boom, especially the foreign TV channels, was posing a serious threat to the Indian languages.

Giving details of the programme, Bharati said the 200 participants in the sammelan would also include at least 10 chairmen-cum-managing directors of the country8217;s leading public sector undertakings and representatives from 45 ministries of the central government. Some of the prominent figures reaching Shimla for participation include Governor of Tripura, Union Labour Minister, and Ministers from various states.

The academy, according to Bharati, has selected seven famous writers for national awards for their outstanding contributions in the field of writing on Indian languages. These also include Shriniwas Srikant from Himachal, Ashok Vajpayee Hindi poet, Sunita Jain, eminent Oria poet Prasanna Patasani and Mahendra Kartikeya.
