Rain helps LF bring temperature down

One storm drowned the other. What was expected to be a defiance rally by the Left Front this evening against the Calcutta High Court order restricting rallies turned out to be a low-key, indoor affair — thanks to inclement weather.

First, CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharya was conspicuous by his absence. Second, rains that continued to lash the city for the third day played spoilsport, reducing the convention into a watered down protest that in no way violated the court order.

But there was no dearth of rhetoric from senior LF leaders, including chairman Biman Bose and Jyoti Basu. The leaders exhorted people to ‘‘protect democratic rights through rallies and processions only’’. Their criticism went on to include the Supreme Court’s decision in the Tamil Nadu case in which it had said that government employees do not have any right to strike work.

‘‘The SC and the high court are coming forward to protect the interests of the liberalisation-globalisation regime in the country,’’ said the resolution adopted at the convention. Basu pitched in with the comment that he had never seen such ‘‘dangerous’’ trends earlire. However, both Basu and Bose acknowledged the need for restraint whenever political or other rallies are taken out in the city. The LF leaders seemed to be looking for modification of the HC terms instead of rejecting it outright.
