The Indian Railways has decided to enhance the ex gratia to passengers hospitalised for more than a month due to accidents or untoward incidents on trains.
Till now, the Railways used to give a lumpsum of Rs 5,000 for persons with grievous injury. If an injured passenger needs to be hospitalised even beyond this, he will be given Rs 500 per week or part thereof for indoor treatment for another next six months. No injured passenger would be paid ex gratia beyond 13 months of hospitalisation.
8220;This ex gratia will be exclusively for passengers who are grievously injured in train accidents or untoward incidents as defined under Section 123 of the Railways Act, 1989 and stay in hospital as indoor patients,8221; said a Railways official.
