Congress MP Rahul Gandhi will accompany Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on his two-day visit to Afghanistan, official sources disclosed here today. The visit—the first by an Indian PM in 29 years—begins on Sunday.

Although he has been tipped for the post of AICC general secretary—to follow the same political trajectory of his father Rajiv Gandhi—Rahul has failed to make his presence felt in Parliament since his election from the Amethi Lok Sabha constituency.

Once, he led a protest against the disruption of Parliament by Opposition and then spoke on the problems of sugarcane farmers of UP in the House. Of late, he has not been seen in the Lok Sabha at all and was missing at Veerbhoomi when the nation remembered Rajiv Gandhi on his birth anniversary last week. His much-publicised road-show in UP also failed to materialise.

Rahul is bound to hog the limelight on the trip to Afghanistan with the PM. Apart from meeting with host President Hamid Karzai, Manmohan Singh is scheduled to call on Baba-e-Millat and former king Zahir Shah and lay the foundation of the Afghanisatan Parliament House.
