Kalyan cracks the whip on copsLUCKNOW: In a major crackdown on the state police, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh on Thursday terminated the service of 100 policemen and put 183 cops under suspension for harbouring links with criminals and mafia. According to a spokesman, the Government has identified 677 more policemen for harbouring criminals and action would be taken against them soon.

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Thursday appointed Najma Heptulla and Salman Khurshid on the panel of spokespersons of the party. While Najma is deputy chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, Khurshid is a former Union Minister. Ambika Soni was appointed on Wednesday.

NEW DELHI: The Government began the new year without a Cabinet Secretary as the Central Administrative Tribunal today restrained T S R Subramanian from attending office.

Clinton visit

REUTERS: US President Bill Clinton will not travel to India and Pakistan in February as scheduled because of political turmoil in both countries, White House officials said. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity yesterday, said Clinton still planned to go on a South Asia tour that will include stops in India and Pakistan later this year, and also possibly Bangladesh.
