The Bengaluru police said on Monday that they arrested six teachers and apprehended two minor students for allegedly leaking a Class 10 preparatory examination question paper and circulating it on social media.
The police identified the arrested accused as Girish V D, a headmaster in Tumakuru; Amjad Khan, an assistant teacher in Ramanagara; Shahida Begum, a teacher; Fahmida, an assistant teacher; Mohammed Sirajuddin, a teacher, and K Farzana Begum, a teacher—all four from Kalaburagi. The minor students were allegedly involved in circulating the leaked question paper online.
The arrests came after the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB) filed a complaint with the North CEN police on January 7, alleging that question papers of Class 10 preparatory examinations were being circulated on social media.
“We have been unable to identify any singular source of the leak. We have found that it was leaked in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Kalaburagi, and Shivamogga. We suspect that the teachers forwarded it to the students in an attempt to get them to pass… But later, the students sold the same question paper to their classmates and on Telegram and other platforms for Rs 300-500,” a police officer said.
The police have registered a case under section 66 (c) of the Information Technology Act, related to identity theft.
At the same police station, an FIR was registered on January 9 against a YouTube channel for allegedly uploading a question paper that resembled one prepared by the pre-university board. The complainant, Raju N, Joint Director of the Department of Pre-University Education in Bengaluru, alleged that a YouTube channel named NiranjanShetty, @Niranjan Shetty9581, prepared a Hindi question paper in the format provided by the department and uploaded it online.
According to the police, the question paper was not authentic but was designed to look authentic.
