A drunk man poured an inflammable liquid on a 44-year-old Andheri resident and set him on fire, resulting in the victim sustaining 25 per cent burns, the Amboli police in Mumbai said on Monday. They have arrested one Nagendra Yadav on charges of attempted murder in connection with the incident.

The police identified the victim as Rajendra Yadav, 44, a driver who lives in the Yadav Nagar area of Jogeshwari (West) with his family.

The police have recorded Rajendra’s statement and registered a case of attempt to murder against Nagendra, said Pramod Kokate, Senior Inspector, Amboli police station.

The incident occurred around 10 pm on Sunday, after Rajendra returned from work and parked his bike near his home, according to the police. He saw his nephew Pankaj Yadav, 22, arguing with a drunk Nagendra at his paan shop. Nagendra had been borrowing cigarettes but had yet to pay.Rajendra intervened in the argument, asking his nephew to stop and Nagendra to stay away from the paan shop. Nagendra, who got angry, left the place but came back within 15 minutes with an inflammable liquid in a bottle and a matchbox. He allegedly poured the liquid on Rajendra’s shirt from behind and lit a matchstick.

Rajendra’s shirt was completely burnt, and he suffered around 25 per cent burns on his back, the police said. He started running here and there, and the people nearby doused the fire. His nephew and others rushed him to Rajendra Trauma Centre Hospital, from where he was shifted to Mallika Hospital in Jogeshwari (West). He is being treated at the Jogeshwari hospital.
