
Jakhar let off in hawala case
NEW DELHI: The Special Court on Friday acquitted senior Congress leader and former Union minister Balram Jakhar in the multi-crore Jain-hawala scam. Special Judge V B Gupta, who had reserved his order in the matter after completion of trial earlier this month, also acquitted the Jain brothers in the case. quot;The prosecution has failed to prove any charges framed against any of the accused persons,quot; Gupta said in his 93-page order.
The CBI had accused Jakhar, the then Lok Sabha Speaker, of receiving illegal gratification as a reward for showing general favour to the Jains while being a public servant.

AHMEDABAD: The six-hour curfew relaxation period in Shahpur and Karanj police station areas passed off peacefully with no fresh incidents of violence being reported from the city. Police Commissioner P C Pandey denied rumours of any fresh incidents in the Guptanagar and Vasna areas during the last 24 hours. The curfew relaxationfor women was extended until 2200 hrs in view of the incident-free day.
PWG ban extended
HYDERABAD: The Andhra Government has extended the ban on the Peoples8217; War Group PWG of Naxalites and six of its frontal organisations for one more year. An official order to this extent was issued on July 22, after reviewing the activities of the extremist organisation in the state.
Nashik raids
NASHIK: A team of 234 personnel from the Income-Tax IT department raided three traders and moneylenders and jewellers in Kalwan and Baglan talukas of Nashik district. Official sources said, the team searched shops and residences of Babilal Sancheti, Chandmal Kataria and Rajaram Nanta Patil on Thursday.
