Bharat Ratna for C Subramaniam

NEW DELHI: The country8217;s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, has been awarded to elder statesman and former Maharashtra Governor C Subramaniam. CS, as he is affectionately called, has made significant contributions to planning, agriculture and other fields. The announcement was made in a Rashtrapati Bhawan on Wednesday. Subramaniam is currently in a hospital with a bout of wheezing and infection. President K R Narayanan himself rang up Subramaniam8217;s residence and conveyed the conferment of the honour to the members of the household.

Ban on JKLF

NEW DELHI: Centre has extended for the third time the ban on Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front JKLF for another two years in view of the continued anti-national activities of the front. The ban will be valid for a period of two years from February 17. The ban was extended for a period of two years in February 1994 and further in February 1996.

ULFA man nabbed

GUWAHATI: Anorganisational secretary of ULFA was today nabbed by the army from Assam8217;s Bongaigaon district. Acting on a tip-off from the police, the army personnel conducted a search and nabbed the ultra, defence sources said here. The ultra was identified as Ranjit Talukdar.

Scribe killed

LUCKNOW: Two persons, including senior journalist Jai Prakash Shahi, were killed and another scribe Dayanand Pandey and Samajwadi Party media-in-charge T S Mehta seriously injured when their car collided with a truck near Khairabad in Sitapur district of UP today. They were on their way to Sambhal for a rally by SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.
