Shiv Sainiks detained under NSA
CHENNAI: Three Shiv Sainiks who were arrested when they allegedly attempted to throw five severed heads of pigs into the M A Chidambaram cricket stadium at Chepauk here on Wednesday to incite communal passions and protest against Pakistan team8217;s arrival here, were today detained under the National Security Act NSA.
An official release here said the three Shiv Sainiks, Narayanan, Kanakaraj and Senthil, were lodged in the Chennai central prison.
Corruption scandal spreads to Sydney
LAUSANNE: The Olympic corruption scandal grew significantly today when an Australian official revealed he had offered 35,000 dollars in inducements to two African International Olympic Committee IOC members the night before Sydney was awarded the 2000 Games.
John Coates, president of the Australian Olympic Committee and a leader of the 2000 Sydney bid, said he had offered the 35,000 dollar inducements to Charles Mukora of Kenya and Major General Francis Nyangweso of Ugandaat a dinner in Monte Carlo, Monaco, on September 22, 1993, the night before Sydney beat Beijing by two votes for the right to stage the 2000 Games.
Woman burnt alive
CANNING WB: A woman was burnt alive and 17 others were injured in a clash between two groups, while 49 houses were torched and looted rendering 400 homeless at a village under Basanti police station last night. South 24 Parganas SP said, bombs and pipeguns were used in the clash at Nirdeshkhal Natun Para village, which occurred over a land dispute.
ISI agent remand
NEW DELHI: Chief metropolitan magistrate R K Gauba today granted a transit remand to Siliguri for the alleged ISI agent Sayed Abu Nasir and asked the crime branch to produce him before the court on February 11.
