Major changes in buyback

NEW DELHI: Bowing to the demands of the corporate sector, Government has made important changes in the ordinance on buyback of shares by companies freeing them of the obligation to seek financial institution8217;s permission to make inter corporate investments. The ordinance reissued on Thursday by President K R Narayanan however restricts the corporates to buyback only 25 per cent shares of their paid up capital.

Draft Plan okayed

NEW DELHI: Union Cabinet on Saturday approved the draft Ninth Plan lowering economic growth target to 6.5 per cent from the earlier projection of seven per cent in the face of economic slowdown but kept unchanged the budgetary support at Rs 374,000 cr. The draft, envisaging plan outlay of Rs 8,59,000 cr, has also lowered the agriculture growth target to 3.9 per cent from the earlier 4.5 per cent.

Ministers quit

ITANAGAR: The Gegong Apang ministry in Arunachal Pradesh received a severe jolt when all the seven ministers belonging toNyishi community resigned on Saturday accusing the CM of non-performance. The ministers resigned in response to a call by the Nyishi elite society, the apex body of the community8217;s intellectual organisations, and the All-Nyishi Students Union.

Girl stabbed

MUMBAI: A 20-year-old girl was stabbed to death by her cousins following a dispute at Mulund this noon. The family of Lalji Pandey had been fighting with their relations over the ownership of a stable for quite some time. At around 1.30 pm today, two cousins of Laliji8217;s daughter Kanchan, quarrelled with her and alleged that she was a woman of loose moral values. An enraged Kanchan aimed a brick at them, but before she could throw it, she was stabbed on her neck by them. Kanchan was taken to the Mulund general hospital but succumbed to her injuries soon.

Coldest day

NEW DELHI: Delhi on Saturday experienced the coldest day in nearly three decades as icy winds swept north India that reeled under piercing cold. The Capital shivered asmercury dipped to 11.6 celsius, the lowest day temperature in the past 28 years.
