Ordinance on multi-member CVC issued

NEW DELHI: An ordinance seeking to confer statutory status on the Central Vigilance Commission CVC and making it a multi-member body was issued today by the Government. President K R Narayanan promulgated 8220;the Central Vigilance Commission, 19998221; to give continued effect to the provisions of the August 25 CVC ordinance, which was amended by another ordinance on October 27 following directions by the Supreme Court after January 11 when they are scheduled to lapse.

NEW DELHI: The Centre today told the Supreme Court that appointment of special judges by the Tamil Nadu Government to try corruption cases against AIADMK supremo Jayalalitha and others was illegal as a state legislation on the subject was yet to get Presidential assent.

Sensex vaults up

MUMBAI: The stock markets showed another inspiring rally as foreign funds continued their buying spree on Friday, pushing up share prices rose across the board. Even as Sensex vaulted by 98.75 points, the business volume on the Bombay Stock Exchange touched the all-time record of Rs 2,046 crore. The index had gained 93 points on Thursday. With this, Sensex has spurted by nearly 337 points in the last five sessions. Sensex BSE-30 sensitive index crossed 3400.97 before closing at 3397.84 at the fag end, showing a sizeable gain of 98.75 points over Thursday8217;s close of 3299.09.
