Tidal wave kills 1,000 in Papua Guinea
PORT MORESBY: A massive tidal wave crashed into the remote north coast of Papua New Guinea wiping seven villages off the map and leaving up to 1,000 people dead, officials said today. The 10-metre tsunami engulfed the heavily populated villages near Aitape, 800 km north of here on Friday 8211; 30 minutes after an undersea earthquake in the area. Many of the villagers are believed to have died instantly as the deadly wall of water struck without warning sending their homes crashing into the raging torrent.
Bodo ambush
GUWAHATI: Bodo militants killed seven Assam police personnel in an ambush in lower Assam8217;s Kokarajhar district Friday night before fleeing with a huge quantity of arms and ammunition into the thick jungles, a top state government official said on Saturday. The militants ambushed the personnel on Jharbari Road and killed all including the assistant commandant, Iron Thapa, on the spot, Kokrajhar deputy commissioner N Thadou said.
Veerappanaide
COIMBATORE: Madesh, a close associate of forest brigand Veerappan was shot dead in the early hours on Saturday in an encounter with Special Task Force in Bannari forest range, police said. Madesh, believed to be the right hand man of the outlaw and another gang member fired at STF personnel, who were carrying out combing operations in the range. In the exchange of fire Madesh was shot dead, police said.
Moderate tremor
NEW DELHI: An earthquake of moderate intensity with magnitude of five on the Richter Scale was experienced in India-China border Saturday, the Indian Meteorological Department here said. The tremor was felt at 11.51 hours and its epicentre was latitude 35.6 degree north and longitude 78.3 degree east.
Kashmir firing
JAMMU: Firing exchanges between Pakistani rangers and BSF troops continued at various places along international border IB in Jammu region during Friday night, a BSF spokesman said here on Saturday. A youth, Rakesh Kumar, was hit by a bullet firedby Pakistani rangers near Krol Krishna border outpost in Hiranagar sub-sector.
