
Bengal bandh turns violent
CALCUTTA: The 24-hour bandh, called by the Kamtapur People8217;s Party KPP demanding a separate Kamtapur state in north Bengal, turned violent today. The police opened fire in Batasi, 35 km from Siliguri, when KPP supporters attacked them with poisoned arrows injuring more than 12 policemen. However, it was not clear whether the police firing has left anyone injured or dead. The police have rounded up over 40 KPP men from various parts of Siliguri and Jalpaiguri where the agitators set State transport vehicles on fire.
Germany beat US
Three-time champions Germany began their World Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over the United States in Group F. Skipper Jeurgen Klinsmann set up Andreas Moeller to score in the first half before scoring the second in spectacular fashion after the interval.Ten German fans were arrested for public order offences before the match in the French capital, police said.
In group A8217;, Norway drew their second match when theywere held 1-1 by Scotland.Havard Flo scored for Norway in the first minute of the second half but Craig Burley got the equaliser for Scotland in the 67th minute.
