NEW DELHI: The maiden general budget for 1998-99 of the new BJP-led government will be presented in the Lok Sabha on June 1. The railway budget would be presented on May 29 preceded by the tabling of a status paper on railways on the opening day.

Rail fare hike
NEW DELHI:
Railway board officials do not rule out the possibility of an increase in freight and passenger fares in the coming budget, unless substantial allocation is made for developmental schemes and expansion projects. Sources on Thursday said the annual outlay is expected to be about Rs 10,000 crore as compared to Rs 8,407 last year. For the modest plan size required for its development, the railways require at least Rs 3,000 crore.

Ambedkar bust
NAGPUR:
Police on Thursday detained a youth for allegedly attempting to desecrate a bust of Dr B R Ambedkar at Vaishali Nagar slums in south-west part of the city. Police said the dog squad was summoned after a pair of chappals and a string were found at the pedestal ofthe bust. The police dog led the trail to the house of the accused, reportedly an activist of an outfit of Republican Party.

Netaji inquiry
CALCUTTA:
The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the Union Government to make fresh inquiry to ascertain inter alia whether Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is dead or alive. The government was also directed, if necessary, to institute a commission of inquiry to find out whether Bose died in a plane crash.
