PATIALA, June 18: Punjabi University authorities have cancelled the selection list for admission to Masters in Business Administration MBA at Guru Kashi Institute of Management Studies and ordered fresh evaluation of answer books of the entrance test held in February this year.
Stating this in an exclusive interview with The Indian Express, Vice-Chancellor Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia said according to the prescribed norms, each candidates, to be eligible for admission to the MBA course, has to obtain at least 25 per cent marks in each subject and 30 per cent marks in aggregate in the entrance test. However, head of the Guru Kashi Institute of Management Studies waived the condition of 25 per cent marks in each subject without any approval from the University and prepared a selection list which has already been notified.
Ahluwalia said taking strict notice of this violation of the norms laid down for admission to the course, he has ordered the cancellation of the already notified selection list and re-evaluation of the entrance test answer books. Now only those candidates who had secured 25 per cent marks in each subject and 30 per cent marks in aggregate, would be eligible for admission. The Vice-Chancellor said he personally felt that the test should have been conducted afresh, but he had taken a lenient view of the situation and to avoid inconvenience to the candidates, had ordered that only those candidates who qualified the entrance test as per the laid down norms would be eligible for admission.
There are about 100 seats in the MBA course at Talwandi Sabo Management Centre, of which 85 seats are in the open category, while some seats are reserved for Non-Resident Indians. Holding of the entrance test in the Talwandi Sabo Centre in February has raised eyebrows in academic circles because the Punjabi University Department of Business Management is yet to conduct the entrance test for admission to its MBA course.
Meanwhile, Ahluwalia disclosed that the University had decided to streamline the conduct of entrance tests for different courses. The practice of one coordinator looking after the work of having the question papers set, getting them printed, conduct of the examination and evaluation of answer sheets has been done away with forthwith. Now the coordinator will submit a panel of paper setters and the University Secrecy Branch will get the papers printed. The coordinator will also have to submit a panel of examiners for the conduct of examination and a panel for the evaluation of answer books.
In another important decision, the University has decided that the marks scored by the candidates in the entrance test would not be disclosed to the interview board with a view to maintain objectivity, credibility and reliability of the entrance test.
Referring to the sad plight of the Punjabi University Regional Centre at Bathinda, the Vice-Chancellor said he would visit the Centre next week. Ahluwalia said efforts would be made to give a fair deal to the faculty members posted at the regional centre and the deserving ones would be shifted to the Punjabi University campus.
The Vice-Chancellor said the matter of re-employment of retired persons was being looked into. He said he had directed the pro-Vice-Chancellor Ram Murti Goel to prepare a list of the retired teachers who had been re-employed. These cases would be looked into and if need be, reviewed.
