
5 city schools contribute to war memorial
Five schools in Pune district together have contributed about Rs. 28,000 to the unique War Memorial Fund taking shape at the Morwada Gardens in Pune Cantonment.
An appeal was released to all schools in the district by Raosaheb Awari, President, Maharashtra state headmasters8217; Association and its other office-bearers including secretaries G P Dhakane and Hanumant Kabade and assistant secretary Abasaheb Jangle.
In response, Shri Mhalsakant Vidyalaya of Akurdi contributed Rs. 10,500, Mahatma Gandhi Vidyalaya of Urali Kanchan Rs. 10,001, Gurukul High School, Lonavla, Rs. 3,510, Shri Shivaji Vidyamandir of Chakan Rs 2,925 and Bansilal Ramnath Agrawal Hindi High School, Pune, Rs. 975.
Awari has assured the Express-Citizens8217; War Memorial Committee that the fund collection drive will gain momentum when the schools re-open for the ensuing academic year and a substantial amount would be collected to express solidarity with the citizen-oriented project and to imbibe among the young students a sense of pride for the sentinels of our frontiers.
PPS protests US sanctions
Patit Pawan Sanghatana, a militant youth organisation, on Thursday burnt a replica of the American flag in protest against the imposition of US sanctions against India, in front of the local office of the Birla ATamp;T Communications Limited, a joint venture of the Aditya Birla Group and the U S communications giant ATamp;T, located at Sharada Centre in Erandwane this afternoon.
About 200 PPS workers demonstrated before the telecommunication company condemning the US move in the wake of nuclear tests conducted by India.Addressing the workers, PPS leader Sandeep Khardekar said all the American companies in India should convey the strong feelings of the Indians to the United States government. He warned that the PPS would not hesitate to appeal to the people to boycott the American products.
A Birla ATamp;T spokesperson, while reacting to the demonstrations, said Birla ATamp;T was an Indian company and was committed to abiding by all the rules and regulations promulgated by the Indian government. The spokesperson said the company did not have any independent position on US sanctions other than those adopted by the government.
Gosavi is Cong nominee
The Congress party on Thursday nominated Kumar Gosavi, former vice-president of the Zilla Parishad, as the candidate for the bye-election of the Mulshi Assembly seat. Meanwhile, former chairman of the Standing committee at the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation PCMC and a Congress aspirant Hiraman Barne also filed his nomination.
The Shiv Sena has nominated Rameshchandra Dhamale, former president of the Zilla Parishad who recently joined the Shiv Sena from the Congress, as the party candidate.
