Thief overpowers police escort, flees
An alleged thief and history-sheeter escaped after overpowering his police escort in Kasba Peth on Sunday aftrnoon. Police officials admitted that there was negligence on part of the police that led to the successful escape bid.

Bhimram Shinde 20 was taken to the Shivajinagar courts where he was remanded to police custody. As the Samarth police station, where he was arrested, lacks a lock up, police naik Yeshwant Kashinath Deshmane was assigned to taken him to the Vishrambaug police station.

Deshmnane decided to walk to the Vishrambaug police station as he did not have any transport available. As the duo reached a crowded area near the Kakasaheb Gadgil statue in Kasba Peth, Shinde took Deshmane by surprise as he pulled at the rope. Shinde managed to overpower him and made good his escape. Deshmane tried to trace him but in vain, the police said.

Woman torched
Property dispute led to the torching of an 87-year-old woman in Padmavati on Sunday afternoon. According to the police the accused, Sharda Vishnupant Bhosale 60, had an argument with her mother-in-law Rukmini Anant Bhosale. On Sunday afternoon, Sharda allegedly poured kerosene on a fast asleep Rukmini and set her afire. Rukmini was admitted to Sassoon hospital with 80 per cent burns. Her condition is stated to be serious.
