Kapoor proves a point; scotches all allegations
In yet another rapid action titled 8220;Operation Blood Lily,8221; by the octroi staff of the Pune Municipal Corporation, fine amounting to Rs 3.35 lakh was recovered from octroi evaders.

The action was just for a single day when a massive nakabandi and a strict vigil was maintained on transport of goods, mainly cloth and electrical goods. Additional Municipal Commissioner Deepak Kapoor led the action with several teams comprising employees of almost all octroi departments.

Refuting all charges of irregularities in the functioning of the octroi departments, Kapoor said that there were no truth in the allegations and that they were being made purposely to demoralise the employees.

An emergency meeting of all the octroi employees was convened on Friday. They were told that any misappropriation, however, small will not be tolerated. The employees were told to ignore the allegations and work efficiently to achieve the target of Rs 239 crore octroi revenue for the year 1999-2000.

8220;Operation Blood Lily8221; commenced at 2 pm on Friday and ended Sunday night. The elite task force confiscated electronic goods comprising music systems and television sets valued at Rs 1.78 lakh being brought in without payment of octroi and imposed a fine of Rs 48,166. The special task force seized expensive silk sarees valued at Rs 1.01 lakh and imposed a fine of Rs 27,610 on it. Similarly, the rapid action force detected octroi evasion on electrical goods and recovered a fine of Rs 55,577.

Fake grocer dupes woman
A house was burgled in Bhosari on Sunday morning when a man posing as a grocer conned the occupant to leave the house for shopping.

Asha Eknath Agarkar, a resident of Bhosari was in her house with her kids when the man claiming to be a grocer came to her house. He told her that the the shops were selling sugar at lower rates. She immediately asked her neighbour to join her and they left for the shop.

Exploiting the situation, he robbed the house of all the valuables and cash amounting to Rs 18,000. Later, when Asha came back, her two children were unharmed but the cupboards were rifled through. She immediately lodged a complaint with the Bhosari police.

Cop attacked
A police constable attached to Dehu Road police station was attacked in Hadapsar when he tried to arrest an accused on Saturday night. Constable Kishore Amrit Yadav had been sent to nab a history-sheeter, Armogam Kudaswami Pillay.

Acting on a tip off that Pillay would be visiting a house in Hadapsar, Yadav and another constable put up a watch. When Pillay arrived at the spot, Yadav came foward to arrest him. Pillay put up a struggle and in the melee bit Yadav8217;s finger, before the constables could bring him under control. After Yadav was administered first aid, he escorted Pillay back to Dehu Road police station. A case of obstruction of justice has been filed at Hadapsar police station.
