Jawan succumbs to Siachen cold
Twenty one year old signalman Ankush Mahesh Wanjale died on Friday morning due to extremely cold weather at Siachen Glacier. His mortal remains were cremated with full military honours on Monday.

Ankush hailed from Kundhve Dhawande located near the National Defence Academy NDA here. The news of his death cast a pall of gloom over the entire village. Wanjale is survived by his mother, father and two brothers.

The Wanjale family who originally belonged to Ahire village have been living at Kundhave village for some time now. Wanjale was posted at Chandan Post at the Partapur Sector in Leh. He was with 102 Signal Company 3 Infantry Brigade. Around seven to eight jawans were on duty at Chandan Post. Wanjale sent a wireless message on Friday morning complaining of a severe stomach ache. He was immediately shifted to the base camp by a helicopter. However, he succumbed even as medical investigations were in process around 11.30 am. His mortal remains were airlifted from Leh and were received with full battle casualty honours here on Monday.

A fax message was sent to Wanjale family informing them about the death. However, none of the family members informed his mother fearing a possible breakdown. His mother realised that something was wrong when she saw a number of people gathering outside their residence.

Subedar Ashok Dhaigude and signalman M M Wanjale brought the Wanjale8217;s body. Wanjale was described as a friendly and soft-spoken man by his friends.

7 hit by food poisoning
Seven members of a policeman8217;s family, including five children, took ill on Monday night after they ate maze corns and khava brought to Pune from their native village in Solapur district.

Shankar Tatyaba Jadhav 65, his daughter-in-law Vimal 32, her daughters Dipali 11, nine-year-old Rupali, three-year-old Pooja and five year old son Akshay as well as nephew Amol Arjun Jadhav 5 have been admitted to the Sassoon hospital.

Hospital sources said all the affected persons were out of danger. They have been kept under constant observation though their condition is improving.
