Girl killed, 8 hurt as bus turns turtle
A 20-year-girl was killed while eight passengers travelling in a luxury bus from Mumbai to Hubli were injured after the bus overturned near Sutarwadi on the Pune-Bangalore highway last night. The mishap occured at around 1 am. The passengers were going to their native place for the ensuing Ganesh festival, police said.

The passengers complained that heavy luggage was loaded on the roof top. The bus driver was driving at high speed and while negotiating a sharp turn, the bus overturned. After the mishap, the bus driver abandoned the vehicle and escaped in the dark. The deceased was identified as Sandhya Dnyandev Bandodkar, a resident of Chakravarty housing society, Andheri east, Mumbai. She was travelling along with her father.

The injured passengers include Khemji Vishnu Naik 55, Prabhavati Vishnu Naik 45, Dhanashree Khemji Naik, Kalpana Rama Naik 24, Shivaji Baburao Chavan 56, Meena Shivaji Chavan 19, Dilip Vasantrao Padate 42, Gajanan Erappa Shinde 28, and Vijaya Dilip Padate 36, all residents of Mumbai. The passengers have have been admitted to two private hospitals. The Chatuhshrungi police is investigating.

Dhole-Patil8217;s son arrested
The Deccan Gymnkhana police on Saturday arrested Sagar Dhole-Patil, son of Ulhas Dhole-Patil who is the candidate of the Nationalist Congress Party NCP in the Bhavani Assembly constituency, for allegedly asking party workers to distribute leaflets printed with defamatory articles about Shiv Sena candidate Deepak Paigude. Following a complaint made by Paigude, the police had arrested two suspects regarding the case and had even seized the defamatory leaflets. Patil was arrested in the morning, and was later released on bail.

Meanwhile, the district collectorate has filed as many as 142 cases against all parties in the 18n assembly segments in the district for violating the provisions of the election code of conduct. Paigude himself figures in the list of the defaulters because he raised slogans outside the district collectorate and staged a dharna against the distribution of the leaflets.

Temporary auto stands
The traffic branch of the city police has allowed 12 new temporary autorickshaw stands for the Ganesh festival between September 13 and 24. The police will be assisting the women passengers to ensure their safe travel at these stands. The police will note down information about the passengers, the number of the autorickshaw and the name and address of the driver at these stands.

The new stands are at Shaniwarpeth police chowkey, Kasba Peth police chowkey, Bhikardas police chowkey, Khandojibaba chowk, Santkabeer chowk, Sanas Plaza Bajirao Road, Poolgate bustop, Patrya Maruti chowk, Shivajinagar ST stand, Pune station ST stand, Swargate ST stand, and opposite Sarasbaug.
