VADODARA, June 7: The State unit of the People8217;s Union for Civil Liberties PUCL has alleged brutality and exploitation of labour by the management of GSL India Limited, located in the nearby Rajpipla area.

In a written complaint to the National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi, the PUCL activists alleged that several labour laws were being flouted by the company. The company they alleged was also disregarding court orders of late. The activists said that the management was falsely framing leaders of the Amletha Mill Mazdoor Union, an officially recognised workers8217; forum, in bogus cases because of its continuous stir for 8220;justice8221;.

Alleging that even official agencies including the Narmada District Collectorate had failed to do the needful, the activists said that three workers had so far sacrificed their lives during the three-year agitation. Two workers had been shot dead about eight years ago, while one of the workers, who was injured during the shootout by the company8217;s security guards, succumbed on May 25 this year.

PUCL secretary Dhiru Mistry alleged that the company management had refused to pay any compensation to the hapless and poor workers, who were either rendered jobless or injured or even killed during the stir, nor was money given for their funeral. It was tragic for hundreds of workers of the company as they were basically tribals or migrants from Uttar Pradesh or Bihar, he said.
