With loudspeakers put on a vehicle, the crowd also urged cricket-lovers to boycott the match against South Africa here.
There were also protests on-air as a radio channel asked listeners to justify their presence at Eden Gardens in the absence of the local hero.
As expected by Cricket Association of Bengal, however, there was a good turnout for the game this afternoon.
