GURGAON, May 1: The district administration has submitted an elaborate flood control programme to meet any eventuality in the flood prone Mewat region of the district.

Under the programme, the administration has proposed construction and augmentation of bunds8217; and various roads, which get affected during the rains.

Deputy Commissioner Devender Singh said construction of bunds8217; at Meoli, Sultanpur, Uleta besides extension of the outfall channel of Gurgaon canal into Ujjain drain, widening of Akera Ringh bund at Muh and construction of small drains from Nizampur to Adbar in the Mewat area has been placed on priority. The administration has also made an estimate for the raising and recarpeting of roads falling in the flood prone area. It includes augmentation work on the Gurgaon-Pataudi Road, Old Manesar Road, Hailey Mamdi-Farruknagar Road, Berhara-Siwari Road, Gurgaon-Alwar Road, Hodal-Punhanimagina Road etc. An official informed that an approximate amount of Rs 168 lakh has been sought from the state government for this project.

The storm water drainage system, to be connected to the Najafgarh drain, continues to hang fire. Experts had cautioned that certain areas of Gurgaon city like the DLF and New Palam Vihar were susceptible to flooding if an effective drainage system is not worked out. They have cited the example of 1978 floods, when the land which remained submerged under water is now a part of the DLF colonies and South City. However, the administration has dismissed these threats and the officials said there was no threat of flooding in Gurgaon city.
