
The Orissa government today ordered a judicial probe into yesterday8217;s violence and police firing on tribals at Kalinga Nagar in Jajpur district, even as opposition parties have seized the opportunity to lash out at Chief Minister Naveen Pantaik.
Patnaik today said that a sitting judge of the Orissa High Court would inquire into the incident8212;in which 13 people, mostly tribals and a police constable were killed.
The Chief Justice of the High Court would be requested to nominate a sitting judge for the purpose. The inquiry would be conducted under the provisions of the Commission of Inquiry Act but no time frame has been fixed for submission of the report.
Earlier, official sources had said the Revenue Divisional Commissioner Central Division would inquire into the incident and submit a preliminary report immediately after which a decision would be taken on the question of ordering a Judicial probe.
The region continued to simmer with protests held at several places today. The CM has appealed to the people to maintain calm.
