Nepal8217;s Election Commission today said that government-backed candidates won 29 mayoral seats while the remaining 29 was won by independent candidates.

The unofficial results showed candidates from the pro-monarchist Rastriya Prajatantra Party winning 25 seats while four candidates also from the government-supporting Nepal Sadbhawana were elected mayors.

The remaining 29 were either from small parties or independent, but many of them are believed to be supporting King Gyanendra.

The election last Wednesday was boycotted by major Opposition political parties and voter turnout was low.

Meanwhile strongly objecting to the international criticism over the polls, Nepal8217;s royal government today asked the countries to refrain from making 8216;8216;insolent, baseless and unacceptable8217;8217; comments on its 8216;8216;domestic8217;8217; matter.

The government 8216;8216;finds the statements made by a few countries on the polls in Nepal as objectionable thus unacceptable and asks them to refrain from making such insolent comments on matters that fall within the domestic jurisdiction of a sovereign country,8217;8217; Nepalese Foreign Ministry said. The government claimed the elections were held without any incidents of rigging, booth capturing or manipulation.

Nepali Congress said the Opposition boycott of the polls had proved to be 8216;8216;highly successful8217;8217;.
