A former WikiLeaks associate on Tuesday said he and a number of other ex-members are preparing to launch an alternative to the whistle-blower website,just days after its latest document dump rocked the world.
8220;We want to set up a system that is different from WikiLeaks,8221; explained 25-year-old historian and student Herbert Snorrason,adding that the project was 8220;built on similar ideas8221; to those behind the organisation that has released hundreds of thousands of classified US documents in recent months.
8220;We broke from WikiLeaks because a few ex-WikiLeaks members had been very unhappy with the way Julian Assange was conducting things,8221; Snorrason said,referring to WikiLeaks8217; enigmatic Australian founder.
8220;They realised that ideas they wanted to come across would never be received,8221; he added.
Assange,who is wanted internationally for questioning about rape allegations in Sweden,has previously been criticised for 8220;acting like an emperor8221; in running his organisation.
Nonetheless,Snorrason insisted the project was 8220;not a personal attack on Julian Assange or WikiLeaks.8221;
8220;It is a different type of project and we do not see it as competition,nor should it be considered to be a WikiLeaks competitor,8221; he said.
The difference,according to Snorrason,was that while WikiLeaks gathers leaked documents and dumps them on its site,the new project 8212; he would not provide a name 8212; will be 8220;a safe haven where people can share information anonymously.8221;
8220;We will not be publishing information ourselves,but rather be the hub of where people can upload information without having to be associated with what they upload,8221; he explained.
WikiLeaks spokesman in Iceland,Kristinn Hrafnsson,could not be immediately reached for comment.
