On Monday,Sri Lanka held their nerve to beat Australia by 20 runs to qualify for the semifinal. The chief architect of their win was Mahela Jayawardene who scored 84 at better than a run-a-ball to help put up a strong total. Ahead of a crucial game against India, the former Sri Lanka skipper talks about getting to 11,000 runs,on helping out captain Angelo Mathews with tips and how his side tweaked their strategy as Australia edged closer.
On Australia scare
They were going hard up front to try and qualify within 29 overs,so we knew there was an opportunity for us to grab wickets, and we did. When they stopped doing that,we knew that we need to take three wickets. With two wickets at that particular time,it was always going to be tough because they only had to score two or three times an over. So we had to be a bit more creative and be patient. It was a fascinating game of cricket purely because of the situations where Australia was and where we were.
On reaching 11,000 runs
We obviously were in that situation in the middle,I didnt feel anything. Obviously,I was pleased when the numbers came up. But,obviously,I can tonight probably reflect more on that achievement because we won the game as well. So the contribution that I made towards the team is much more valuable for me,but quietly I should be able to reflect on that achievement.
Angelos guardian
I try not to do too much and I let him make all the calls, but I do try to help him out in tough situations when I feel that he is out of sorts or something. Its important that this is his team now and for him to make mistakes sometimes or make good calls will help him learn while on the job. So I try to help him as much as possible in tough situations, and just be wise here and there. But I think so far in this tournament weve had some really tough games, and I thought Angelo handled himself really well.
On playing India
I think theyre playing some really good cricket. Their batting looks really strong,so those are key areas that we need to focus a bit on,but its the semifinal. Warm-up games dont count right now.
On wanting to beat India
Ill be desperate to win every game. Its not about trophies or whatever, its just to win matches. So Ill have that same passion and desperation to win games, doesnt matter if its a semifinal or final or just a group game. As long as I and the rest of the boys have that attitude, well go a long way.
On the tiff with Wade
Nothing much. Its all good. We shook hands after the game. He said something about the way I was batting in the last few overs,so I just told him dont worry, there is obviously a plan. You see once we finished the game,I had the last laugh.
