The Delhi batsmen showed no application and scant respect to the bowlers or match situation,as they were shot out for a paltry 212 at their home ground of Ferozeshah Kotla on Day One of the Ranji Trophy match against Tamil Nadu on Friday.
If not for half-centuries by opener Unmukt Chand 86 and middle-order batsman Yogesh Nagar 59,Delhi would have folded up long before the final session. In reply, the visitors were eight for no loss when fading light forced early stumps.
On a Kotla pitch with an inconsistent bounce,Tamil Nadu bowled with discipline all day. Laxmipathy Balaji,in particular, impressed with the movement that he generated off the seam while debutant seamer Jagananath Kaushik gave him ample support. Yo Mahesh was unplayable at times and cleaned bowled Milind Kumar twice the second time on a legitimate delivery.
Left-arm spinner Aushik Srinivas came on late and broke the partnership between Chand and Mithun Manhas just when it had begun to look threatening.
The TN attack not only had bite,it also stifled the scoring to the extent of bowling eight maidens on the trott after tea, conceding eight runs and picking up three wickets in one hour of play.
Delhi, who won the toss and elected to bat, were off to a poor start with Shikhar Dhawan edging a Balaji delivery in the very first over. Chand played aggressively initially, but with wickets falling at regular intervals,he went into a shell. With Nagar,he stitched 62-run stand for the fourth wicket before getting an inside edge to Kaushik,14 short of a ton. Nagar waged a lonely battle, belting two sixes and a boundary take Delhi past 200. He was the last man to be dismissed, attempting another big one,off Kaushik.
Brief scores: Delhi 212 all out in 80.5 overs U Chand 86,Y Nagar 59; L Balaji 3/42,J Kaushik 3/41 vs Tamil Nadu 8/0
