Red Bull dominated Fridays practice at the Singapore Grand Prix,setting the two fastest times. Sebastian Vettel set a time of 1 minute,46.660 seconds around the Marina Bay circuit in the second practice session ahead of team mate Mark Webber and third-fastest Jenson Button of McLaren. Ferraris Fernando Alonsos session was cut short after he took an escape road and couldnt restart while McLarens Lewis Hamilton was fifth.

Force Indias Adrian Sutil snapped his front suspension when going too hard over the kerbs and Renaults Robert Kubica also had his second session limited by a hydraulics problem.

Lin,Lee enter semifinals

Beijing Olympic badminton gold medallist Lin Dan battled past Park Sung-Hwan in the quarter-finals of the Japan Open 22-20 21-16. In the semi-finals,Lin will play two-time champion Peter Gade of Denmark,who eliminated Tien Minh Nguyen of Vietnam 21-13,21-13. World number one Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia coasted to a 21-10,21-10 win over defending champion Bao Chunlai of China and now plays Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand,winner over Chinas Chen Long 21-16,17-21,21-12.

Bhullar shares four-way lead

Gaganjeet Bhullars bogey-free opening round of four-under 67 enabled him to share the lead at the Asia-Pacific Panasonic. Korean SK Ho and Japans Shintaro Kai and Kazuhiko Hosokawa lead the leaderboard. SSP Chowrasia 71 and Anirban Lahiri 74 were tied 31 and 61 respectively. India Open winner C Muniyappa was also tied 61 after carding an identical 74.

Lajong FC draw Salgaocar

Lajong FC and Salgaocar of Goa drew 2-2 to share points in a Group D match of the Federation Cup quarterfinals. Lajong went ahead early through BL Lalthemphara in the 13th minute but Luciano Sobraosa levelled for Salgaocar. Boithang Hoakip again put Lajong ahead before Salgaocar levelled two minutes from time. In another match,Mohun Bagan and Mumbai FC fought a goalless draw.

Indians lose in chess Olympiad

GM K Sasikiran and Surya Sekhar Ganguly lost to their respective opponents as the Indian men went down to hosts Russias second team in the fourth round of the 39th chess Olympiad. Sasikiran lost to Ian Nepomniachtchi while Ganguly went down to Nikita Vituigov. Harikrishna drew Evgeny Alekseev while GN Gopal split points with Evgeny Tomashevsky. The Indian women also went down fighting to Bulgaria 1.5-2.5. D Harika lost to Antoaneta Stefanova while Tania Sachdev drew Margarita Voiska,S Meenakshi drew Iva Videmova and Adriana Nikolova drew Eesha Karavade.

New stadiums in Punjab

Punjab Government has approved construction of 14 floodlit sports stadiums of international standards,including eight multipurpose,at a cost of Rs 123 crore to be completed by August 15 next year. The multipurpose stadiums will be built at Bhatinda,Sangrur,Hoshiarpur,Amritsar,Mansa,Gurdaspur,Jalandhar and Ludhiana while five floodlit hockey stadiums would be constructed at Faridkot,Ludhiana,Amritsar,Jalandhar and Mohali.

Vesnina,Kudryavtseva in final

Elena Vesnina and Alla Kudryavtseva will play in an all-Russian final at the Tashkent Open. In the semifinals,fourth-seeded Vesnina beat fifth-seeded Monica Niculescu of Romania 6-3,3-6,6-4 while seventh-seeded Kudryavtseva defeated Evgeniya Rodina 6-1,3-6,6-3.
