Army Chief-designate Lt Gen Bikram Singh,currently GoC-in-C of Eastern Command,who leaves for Delhi tomorrow to take over his new assignment the next day,is said to have told his senior colleagues that one of his prime tasks would be to put the Army back on track. Admitting that there have been setbacks of late,he is said to have added that he would not brush anything under the carpet.
Lt Gen Singh called on the West Bengal governor this afternoon and met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee yesterday.
This morning,at a meeting with senior officers,sources said,Lt Gen Singh said that,in his view,the Army should have a public space in democracy,but it should not spill into the political or bureaucratic arena.
He is said to have underlined that he would address complaints of corruption,inadequacy and inefficiency.
Over the past few weeks,Lt Gen Singh has toured the commands at Sukna,3 Corps and 4 Corps. He will take over from General V K Singh on Thursday.
Lt Gen Dalbir Singh of 3 Corps is expected to take over as Army Commander of the Eastern Command on June 1 or 2 but the announcement will not be made public till Gen V K Singh relinquishes charge.
Just before retirement,Gen Singh issued a show-cause notice to Lt Gen Dalbir Singh for an alleged botched operation in Jorhat in Assam in December last year. Sources said that in case Lt Gen Dalbir Singh cant take over immediately he has got another 10 days to reply Lt Gen Shakti Gurung of 4 Corps could officiate for a while.
