Lanka govt will implement Rights action plan

Sri Lankan Minister for Human Rights Mahinda Samarasinghe said on Wednesday that the government was committed to implementing the Human Rights action plan soon.

Briefing the media on his visit last week to Geneva to attend the UN Human Rights Council sessions,Samsrasinghe said over 50 countries had appreciated Sri Lanka8217;s progress since the end to the conflict with the LTTE.

8220;A small number of countries targeting Sri Lanka cannot be regarded the international community,8221; he said in an obvious reference to Western criticism of the island8217;s rights record and their calls for accountability.

Samarasinghe said that it was unfair for rights watch groups and nations to dismiss the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission LLRC.

when invited,8221; he added.
