After making Delhi police run around in circles for days, former Haryana minister Gopal Goyal Kanda surrendered to them in front of the Ashok Vihar police station early Saturday morning. At the end of a night-long drama, played out live on news television,Kanda managed to evade four checkpoints and landed in front of the police station around 4 am to join investigations. Kanda, accused of abetting the suicide of his former employee Geetika Sharma, was formally arrested and produced before a Delhi court which sent him to police custody for seven days. While the Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar tweeted on Friday morning that his best boys were on the job of tracking and arresting Kanda, his men appeared clueless, waiting for the businessman-politician to surrender. After rumours of Kandas surrender started doing the rounds, the North West district police set up barricades and conducted checks in the whole district. As policemen and reporters waited outside the police station,Kandas brother Govind arrived with his entourage at 12.20 am and announced that the surrender would happen within 15-20 minutes. Kandas slogan-shouting supporters and Govind were detained by police. Govind was later arrested for a cheque-bouncing case. Eight police teams, meanwhile, were on the road, checking each vehicle, hoping to arrest Kanda on his way to the police station and salvage some pride. A battery of Kanda lawyers arrived shortly. Why dont you ask them when he is surrendering. Honestly,we dont have any idea, said an officer. Kandas counsel received a call at 3.50 saying the former minister had entered Delhi from Gurgaon. His counsel reportedly met him outside a banquet hall just a km from the Ashok Vihar police station where he was reportedly hiding between two parked trucks. Kandas counsel called a couple of TV reporters and asked them to meet him secretly. They left immediately and at 4.05 Kanda arrived in the van of STV UP News,a local channel. He had crossed four police checkpoints. Before being taken inside the police station,Kanda told reporters that he had willingly joined the investigations and had not been arrested.
