CID inspector, constable arrested for ‘demanding’ Rs 30 lakh bribe from person accused in a case in Gujarat

They were arrested by a team of the ACB ‘red-handed while accepting the amount’ in Sargasan, Gandhinagar.

The duo was caught red-handed during a trap laid after the complainant approached the ACB, with further investigation underway.

The Gujarat ACB arrested CID Crime Inspector Petha Karamshi Patel and Constable Vipul Desai for allegedly demanding and accepting a Rs 30 lakh bribe in Gandhinagar.

The Gujarat Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Monday said it arrested a Police Inspector and a Constable of the CI Cell of CID Crime for allegedly seeking and receiving a bribe of Rs 30 lakh from a person accused in a case they were investigating.

Inspector Petha Karamshi Patel and Armed Constable Vipul Babu Desai were, on Monday morning, arrested by a team of the ACB “red-handed while accepting the bribe amount” in Sargasan, Gandhinagar.

In a statement on Monday, the ACB said that Police Inspector PK Patel and Constable Vipul Desai demanded a bribe of Rs 30 lakh from the complainant and the complainant’s friend for not taking any action in an FIR filed against them at the CID Gandhinagar Zone police station.

“The complainant did not want to pay the bribe amount, so he contacted the ACB and filed a complaint. On December 15, a team led by ACB PI DN Patel set a trap to apprehend them red-handed,” said the ACB.

Further investigation is underway.
