Playing their respective opening matches of the Olympic Qualifiers, siblings David and Stephanie Jameson enjoyed contrasting results. While the Canadian men featured in a 9-0 blowout of Italy, the women barely held on,drawing 2-2 against Italy. Regardless of how their matches ended,David and Stephanie Jameson told their family how things went. I think we will probably start off with the win, smiles 28-year-old David, who opened Canadas score.
The veteran of 171 caps says calling home after the day8217;s match has always been a habit. Whenever we play a match we always call up back home. Mom played hockey in the 1970s,my dad played badminton ,so we have always been a sporting family, he says.
Stephanie says she hasn8217;t been worried about the family8217;s reactions about results. My parents have never really bothered about who wins or loses. They are always quite supportive, she says. She also disagrees with David8217;s assesment of which match is discussed first. I believe the family have been watching David8217;s match live over the internet even though it8217;s midnight in Canada. So we would probably begin by talking about my match first. Anyway its always exciting to call them together, says the 30-year-old Stephanie, who earned her 163rd cap.
But there isn8217;t as much competitiveness between them as there was when growing up. Initially it would be about who scored the most goals and David would usually win because he played as a forward, she says.
Goal-stoppers
With both of them now playing in the midfield and defensive roles it has become a case of who prevents more goals. That competitive streak though has been substituted by a form of ribbing. We don8217;t usually rib each other after matches unless of course we both have done well. Then we give each other a hard time. Today he had a good game while we didn8217;t exactly get the result we wanted so I think he will go a little easy on me, says Stephanie.
But within the team, they now play more of a supporting role. Now we try and help each other out and provide tips to one another, concludes Stephanie.
